What S1, S2 and S3 mean

Safety footwear sold for industrial use is usually tested to EN ISO 20345. Every rated shoe has a toe cap that withstands a 200 J impact; the letters add protection on top of that.

RatingWhat it addsTypical use
SB200 J toe cap onlyBasic protection where nothing else is required
S1Closed heel, antistatic, energy-absorbing heel, fuel-oil resistant soleDry indoor work: warehouses, workshops, logistics
S1PS1 plus a penetration-resistant midsoleDry areas with nails, screws or sharp debris
S2S1 plus a water-resistant upperIndoor and outdoor work with splashes or wet floors
S3S2 plus a penetration-resistant midsole and a cleated outsoleConstruction sites, oil and gas, outdoor work

Slip resistance is marked separately (SRA, SRB, SRC — SRC covers both tested surfaces). Ask for the marking on the shoe or the declaration of conformity.

Choosing the right pair

  • Low or high ankle. Low ankle shoes are lighter and cooler for warehouse and indoor work; high ankle boots support the ankle on uneven ground and keep debris out on sites.
  • Steel or composite toe. Steel caps are thinner and economical; composite caps are lighter, do not conduct heat or cold and do not set off metal detectors.
  • Heat. In Saudi summers breathable linings and lighter shoes are worn more consistently, which is what protects the worker.
  • Fit. Try shoes at the end of the day with work socks; there should be room to move the toes inside the cap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between S1 and S3 safety shoes?

Both have a 200 J toe cap. S1 adds a closed heel, antistatic properties and an energy-absorbing heel for dry work; S3 adds a water-resistant upper, a penetration-resistant midsole and a cleated sole for wet or outdoor sites such as construction.

Steel toe or composite toe?

Steel toes are economical and slimmer. Composite toes are lighter, do not transfer heat or cold and are better where workers pass through metal detectors. Both meet the same 200 J impact test.

How often should safety shoes be replaced?

When the sole is worn smooth, the upper is cut or split, the toe cap is exposed or dented, or after any heavy impact on the toe. For daily site use that is often within a year.
