Choosing a spill kit

Match the absorbent to what can leak, then size the kit to the largest container it has to cover.

Keep kits where spills start — next to drum storage, transfer points, generators and loading bays — and train the people who work there to use them. Restock after every use.

Secondary containment

Drums and IBCs should stand on a spill deck, sump or accumulation centre that can hold at least the contents of the largest container, so a leak is caught before it reaches a drain. The range includes Brady 2-drum spill decks, modular spill decks, basins and sumps, the Justrite 6-drum accumulation centre and drum ramps for loading.

Storing flammables and corrosives

  • Flammable liquids belong in a flammable safety cabinet with self-closing doors, such as the Justrite Sure-Grip EX range (single and double door, up to 45 gallons) or the COSHH flammable storage cabinet. Justrite cabinets are designed to NFPA 30 and OSHA requirements.
  • Acids and corrosives go in a separate corrosive cabinet, never with flammables. The Justrite Sure-Grip countertop and EX corrosives cabinets have trays that keep acid off the steel.
  • Fuel is carried and dispensed in approved safety cans — Type I with one opening, Type II with two — colour-coded red for gasoline and yellow for diesel.
  • Oily rags go in an oily waste can with a self-closing lid, which starves them of oxygen and limits the risk of spontaneous combustion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an oil-only and a chemical spill kit?

Oil-only absorbents soak up oils and fuels but repel water, so they work outdoors and on water. Chemical (HazMat) kits use absorbents that are safe with acids, bases and aggressive chemicals. Use the kit that matches what you store; a universal kit covers oils, coolants and water-based liquids.

What size spill kit do I need?

Size the kit to at least the largest container it has to cover — a 55-gallon kit for a single drum area, larger kits or several kits where more drums are stored or transferred.

Can flammables and acids be stored in the same cabinet?

No. Flammables go in a flammable safety cabinet and corrosives in a separate corrosive cabinet, kept apart.

What do the colours on safety cans mean?

The common code is red for gasoline and yellow for diesel. Type I cans have one opening for filling and pouring; Type II have separate openings for each.

Do you supply replacement absorbents for existing kits?

Yes. Send the kit model or the absorbent type and quantity with your quote request.
