A single-gas detector is a personal monitor worn on the collar for one known hazard, most often hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on oil and gas sites. A multi-gas detector watches several hazards at once; the standard 4-gas set is oxygen (O2), combustible gases as a percentage of the lower explosive limit (LEL), carbon monoxide (CO) and H2S. If the hazard can change — confined spaces, tank cleaning, sewers, process plants — choose multi-gas.

Alarm points to know
Most detectors ship with alarm points close to these, and many sites keep them; your company standard may set others.
- O2: low alarm 19.5 %, high alarm 23.5 % by volume.
- Combustibles: 10 % LEL low, 20 % LEL high.
- H2S: 10 ppm low, 15 ppm high.
- CO: 35 ppm low, 200 ppm high.
Bump tests and calibration
- Bump test before each day's use — a short exposure to test gas to prove every sensor and alarm responds. This is the industry practice and what most site permits ask for.
- Full calibration at the interval set by the manufacturer and your site procedure, and always after a failed bump test.
- Two-year disposable detectors such as the BW Clip and Clip4 need no battery or sensor changes, but still need bump testing.
- Keep the records: inspectors and permit issuers ask for the last bump and calibration dates.

What is the difference between a 4-gas and a single-gas detector?
A single-gas detector monitors one hazard, usually H2S, and is worn as a personal alarm. A 4-gas detector monitors O2, combustible gases (LEL), CO and H2S together and is the standard choice where the atmosphere can change.
Do I need a pumped gas detector?
For testing a confined space before anyone enters, yes: a pump draws the sample through a hose from outside the space. For continuous personal monitoring while working, a diffusion detector worn on the body is enough.
How often should a gas detector be calibrated?
