What WD-40 does — and what it does not
The name stands for «Water Displacement, 40th formula». The multi-use spray pushes moisture off metal, frees stuck and rusted bolts, cleans light grime and leaves a thin protective film — which is why it lives in every maintenance kit.
- Use it for: loosening seized fasteners, displacing moisture from electrical connectors and tools, light lubrication of hinges, locks and mechanisms, and short-term corrosion protection.
- Do not rely on it for: bearings, gears and chains under load. They need the grease or oil the equipment maker specifies — see lubricants for Molykote grease and ISO-grade gear oils.
- Rust already there? The WD-40 rust remover is made to dissolve existing rust; follow it with a protective coat.
For thread-locking rather than freeing, see Loctite. Order by the carton through the quote request page.
